What disturbs your dreams, oh country dweller is a collaborative piece by Spooky Beore in the form of a short radio play set in the universe of the Smullens. The Smullens and the universe they inhabit are an ongoing project within Spooky Beore. The Smullens are a response to the white-washed, respectable, and middle-class construction of Irish culture that was preserved by cultural nationalists at the expense of the less palatable aspects of folk life, folk customs and folklore in the construction of the state.

This is the story of the hapless micro-influencer Cathy Conroy, creator of the “Depreciated Irish Dwellings” brand. Cathy comes to Aranmore to do a special “Big Get-away” series for her platforms. What we hear is her record of that experience. Cathy has been hired by the Aranmore Business Association to create this series as sponsored content, aiming to encourage a small contingent of American “D.I.D” subscribers to move to the Island. However, over the course of her stay, she starts to believe she has been lied to... She is kept up at night by the sound of a corncrake outside the window of her hostel. There is no good coffee on the island. The islanders are ambivalent to her growing paranoia. She cannot seem to find any of the Island’s new American residents to do a “bit for the gram”. At night time, she watches the youtube channel “Cheap Irish Houses” with envy. When she does sleep she has fretful dreams about the Aranmore 5g digital hub and the strange sack faced figures who chirp and peck and claw in the dark…
