Sculpture. Ash, copper and wool. 42cm x 37cm x 35cm

Magnetism is an exploration of sculptural space, how we occupy space in the world, and the potential of that space.Thinking of magnetism both literally and metaphorically the work tries to capture the invisible forces that attract or repel. It invites viewers to contemplate the interplay between opposing forces, be it attraction and resistance or harmony and discord.

By juxtaposing extreme contrasts, Michelle wants to create objects imbued with energy with their own force to act upon the world, independent of their creator. In this work motifs of  tapestry loom warps are marked onto the frame as a space to hold this energy. The artwork acts as a vessel, transcending its physical form to evoke a spiritual or memorial presence, reminiscent of a séance.

Michelle King is an artist from Tipperary working in sculptural forms. She is interested in the Irish Surreal Narrative, the uncanny, and the juxtaposition of extreme contrasts in beauty and monstrosity.
