CLOUDS
Sculpture:
PVC cut-outs, timber legs
Clouds is a series of 3 free-standing cloud-shaped sculptures mounted on timber poles. The sculptures were originally created as part of my solo show ‘Brain Worms’ which opened in August 2021 with Sample-Studios, Cork. The clouds are inspired by cartoons, and how natural phenomena are represented in unnatural or artificial terms. That which we recognise as being ‘clouds’ through this particular shape’s acceptance as a symbol is actually relatively far-removed from what real clouds are like. The work responds to the idea that how we perceive the world, nature and our environments is mediated in cultural terms. The acceptance of this ‘cloud’ shape as being representative of a cloud, illustrates the degree of separation between how we perceive nature and how nature might actually be.
