WAKE

Video Essay:

5 mins

Wake is a video piece that centers itself around climate anxiety. This piece aims to resonate these intense feelings of anxiety and helplessness for the Earth and humanity, within the viewer.

“With this video, I am attempting to portray the haunting feeling I relate to when it comes to climate issues; we can go about our routine and be so preoccupied that you don’t think about the scale of things outside yourself 90% of the time, but there is always the reality of things playing on our subconscious, that tends to break through when we have too long with our thoughts, or as a nightmare when we sleep.”

This piece hopes to validate these feelings in some way, yet also draw attention to these fears and anxiety, as they are a result of issues that perhaps more people need to fear.

RACHEL NAUGHTON

- Rachel Naughton is a mixed media visual artist, living and working in Dublin. Naughton explores time as the overarching theme in her work. More specifically, she is concerned with how we perceive time in relation to its geological and human registers. Drawing from our experience of the day-to-day and the sense of time imposed on us through standardised clock time; she pairs this interest in our shared experience, with a curiosity in the expansiveness of time outside ourselves. Naughton aims to draw attention to these multifarious conceptions of time in her work and create a moment of reflection on this within viewers. Temporal attributes such as repetition, suspension, and anticipation are employed in an attempt to manifest a sense of time across various media; primarily printmaking andmoving image works in the form of ‘slow cinema’.
